Tutoring Approach

How DrMCAT Tutoring Works

How is DrMCAT different from large test prep companies?
DrMCAT offers truly private, one-on-one tutoring with Dr. Stuart Donnelly personally — not a rotating cast of tutors or recent graduates. Stuart holds a Ph.D. from the University of Oxford and has over 20 years of dedicated MCAT teaching experience. Every session is tailored to your individual needs, weaknesses, and learning style. You will never sit through a generic lecture or follow a one-size-fits-all curriculum.
Can online MCAT tutoring be as effective as in-person sessions?
Absolutely. The majority of DrMCAT's students now study online via Zoom, and they achieve the same outstanding results as in-person students. Online sessions have the added benefit of being recordable, so you can revisit complex topics at any time. Dr. Donnelly uses screen sharing, a digital whiteboard, and real-time document collaboration to make online sessions just as interactive and productive as sitting across the table.
What materials and resources does Dr. Donnelly use?
Dr. Donnelly uses AAMC official practice materials as the core of every study plan — these are the gold standard for MCAT preparation because they come directly from the test-makers. He supplements with resources from Kaplan, Princeton Review, and proprietary materials he has developed over 20+ years of MCAT tutoring. He also creates custom practice sets targeted to each student's specific weaknesses, ensuring that every minute of study time is focused and productive.
MCAT Prep Strategy

Study Timeline, Scores, and Exam Day

How far in advance should I start preparing for the MCAT?
Most students benefit from 3 to 6 months of structured preparation. However, Dr. Donnelly also runs intensive programmes for students with shorter timelines. The ideal start date depends on your baseline knowledge, how many prerequisite courses you have completed, and how many hours per week you can dedicate to studying. During your free consultation, Stuart will assess your readiness and recommend a realistic timeline.
What MCAT score improvement can I realistically expect?
Students who complete a full tutoring programme with Dr. Donnelly typically see a composite increase of 10 to 15 points. Some students have gained as many as 17 points. Results depend on your starting point, study commitment, and the number of tutoring hours. Dr. Donnelly will give you an honest assessment of what is achievable during your free consultation — he will never make unrealistic promises.
What is a good MCAT score for medical school?
A "good" score depends on your target schools. The average MCAT score for MD matriculants is approximately 511–512 (82nd–85th percentile). For top-20 medical schools, you will typically need 519 or higher (96th+ percentile). DO programmes generally accept scores in the 504–506 range. Dr. Donnelly works with you to set a realistic target based on your school list and overall application strength. Visit our MCAT Scores page for detailed percentile tables.
Do you help with medical school applications after the MCAT?
Yes. Many students continue working with Dr. Donnelly after their MCAT for guidance on personal statements, secondary essays, and interview preparation. Stuart has extensive experience advising students through the entire medical school admissions process, from building school lists to crafting compelling narratives that highlight your unique strengths.
